Freelance Businesses You Can Run From Home

If you really give it some thought, and maybe do a little bit of research, you’ll come to find that there are actually many different businesses that you can run completely from a laptop as long as you have access to the Internet. Just off the top of my head I can think of 10 businesses that you can run completely from your laptop.

1. Writing

The Internet has no shortage of opportunities for a half way decent writer to make great money. On the Internet, it is said that content is king. There are literally hundreds of websites that are in constant need if fresh content for their blogs. News websites always need to have good stories that are both fresh and interesting, which is not easy to do. There’s tons of digital publications that need good articles for their readers every time they put out a new issue. If you can create content that will bring traffic to any of these websites, they will compensate you well.

2. Web Design

Web design is another service that is always in demand. Hundreds of new websites are created every single day. As more and more people turn to the internet to do their shopping, businesses will need more websites, more web pages for their websites, landing pages, and squeeze pages; and someone has to design these things for them.

You don’t even need to know anything about coding or really have any web design experience to do this either. I designed the website for  The Internet Money Journal myself without ever attempting web design prior to that. What makes this possible is that there are quite a few platforms available today, like WordPress, that make it so easy to create a website that a child could figure it out. Being that this is the case, you would think that everyone would just create their website themselves thus saving themselves the expensive costs of hiring a pro designer. The reason that people don’t do this, however, is that the majority of people are absolutely terrified at the thought of attempting web design themselves so they are willing to pay quite a bit of money to have someone do it for them, and that’s where you come in!

3. SEO

Every business wants their website to be on the first page of Google search results. Being on that first page for your industry’s main keywords could easily bring your business hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional revenue; it is that powerful! If you know how to improve a website’s performance in search results effectively, then you have a skill that is in extremely high demand. According to Rank Pay, the average SEO expert charges between $80 and $130 per hour! If you know how to get a website ranked high in the major search engines, and you’re not doing it for a living then I have one question, what are you thinking?

4. Graphic Design

Like web design, this is another activity that is so much easier than people think, due to the fact that there are platforms, like Canva, that make graphic design super simple. Also like web design, graphic design is something that many people are terrified at the thought of attempting themselves, so they are willing to pay a graphic designer good money to do it for them. According to Deluxe.com the average cost of a logo design starts at $100, and that is for a simple design that would take a decent designer less than an hour to make. $100 is a pretty good amount of income for less than an hour of your time!

5. Digital Marketing

Digital marketing includes activities such as email marketing, influencer marketing,  affiliate marketing, content marketing, social media marketing, PPV, PPC, and any other type of marketing that is done on the Internet. According to a book titled, “The Laptop Millionaire,” companies are spending 1 in every 4 of their advertising dollars on online advertising. Really great book by the way, I highly recommend reading it. The point is, if you set yourself up to be the go to digital marketing person for just a handful of companies, this cloud translate to a really great income!

6. Virtual Assistance

Virtual assistance is a service that is becoming increasingly more popular amongst both employers and freelancers, and there is some great great money to be made in it. A virtual assistant is a person who works remotely, and performs any tasks that can be done on a computer or over the phone. If you have special skills, then you can really make a great income in this field. According to Zip Recruiter, the average salary of a virtual assistant is over $56K per year, however, I have heard of virtual assistants earning 6 figures!

7. Translation Services

If you are multilingual, then this is a career you should really consider getting into. The Internet has made the world a much smaller place, and more companies are beginning to do business internationally. When a company is doing business on a global scale, it is inevitable that it is going to run into language barriers with some of its clients or customers, so translators need to be brought in. According to Zip Recruiter, the average salary of a translator is over $63K per year. Now, if you were a freelance translator, you can potentially earn a lot more, because you can set your own rates. Charge by the word for written translation, and charge by the hour for verbal translation.

8. Transcription Services

Journalists often need to have their interviews transcribed, lawyers need court reporters, doctors need medical Transcriptionists, music producers need song lyrics transcribed, etc. According to Zip Recruiter, the average salary of a transcriptionists is over $58K, but as a freelancer that sets their own rates, you can potentially earn more.

9. Video Creation

If you are good at any type of video creation and you’re not monetizing your skill, you really should be. Online video ads are very popular among advertisers, and they continue to increase in popularity, especially YouTube ads. As a freelance video ad creator, you could charge a flat fee per video that you create, you could charge a rate per minute of video, or you could create videos for free and charge clients per view.

10. Social Media Management

Smart advertisers know that social media is where it’s at nowadays when it comes to reaching new customers or clients. People spend an average of 40 minutes per day on social media, and most companies recognize the value of this, the problem that they have is that they just don’t have the time to manage a presence on social media so they outsource this responsibility to freelancers, and there is no shortage of businesses that need this type of service. According to Glassdoor, the average income of a social media manager is over $55K per year, but as a freelancer who sets their own rates, you can potentially earn 6 figures for this service.
