For those of you that own your own website, or plan to at some point in the future, you should know that internet traffic, or visitors to your website, is really the lifeblood of your online business. Without traffic, you have no one to look at your content, or buy your products and services. Your website MUST have a consistent flow of traffic in order for your online business to survive.
There is a number of ways to drive traffic to your website, some being more effective than others. One of the most effective ways to drive traffic to your website is by getting your website to rank well in major search engines like Google or Bing. If you have a website that ranks well in search engines for your target keywords, this means that your website shows up in top search results for those keywords.
Did you know that the websites that show up on the first page of any given search get 91% of the traffic share generated by that search? This means that of all the people performing a search with the same specific keywords, only 9% or less will end up clicking past page 1 of the search results. So, if your website is on page 2 of the results from specific keywords that are searched, it means that your website is competing with every other website on page 2 for only 9% of traffic generated by that particular search query. Needless to say, if your website shows up on page 3 of the search results you are, for lack of a better word, fucked. The importance of getting your website to rank well in the search engines for your target keywords cannot be stressed enough.
Any action that you take to improve your website’s search ranking is referred to as Search Engine Optimization or SEO. There is a number of things that you can do to improve your website’s SEO, one of them is link building which is what we’re going to focus on in this post.
Google and most other search engines use quite a few factors to determine where a website is going to show up in their search results. One of the most influential of these factors is the number and the quality of other websites that link to the website in question. So, one of the most effective ways to improve your website’s search ranking is to get other relevant websites to link to your own website, this activity is called “link building.”
Now, it’s not enough to get any random websites to link to your own site. You need to focus on getting backlinks from websites that are relevant and credible. Any website that already ranks well for any of the keywords that you are trying to get your website to rank for is a good website to try and get a backlink from.
Link building is an ongoing, and tedious process, but it is not hard if you know what you’re doing. Bing Webmaster Tools – Bing Webmaster Tools is a resource that no website owner should do without. You can see how many other websites are linking to your own site, and get information about each individual backlink. Bing Webmaster Tools also has several other great tools that come in handy.
Broken Link Checker – For one reason or another, sometimes links will stop working. Routinely checking for broken links is something that you should be doing as part of your standard website maintenance protocol. This tool will tell you how many broken links your website has, and show you the location of each one.
Buzzstream Link Building Query Generator – Enter information about your brand, your competitors and your market and this tool will generate link building queries that are likely to uncover good link opportunities.
Directory Critic – Directory Critic is basically a directory of directories. I use it to find the best directories to submit my website to. You can search directories by categories such as niche directories, local directories, and article directories.
Directory Maximizer – this website has several proven link building services that can really help boost your website’s ranking. The services that it provides are shown in the illustration below.
Drop My Link – they call themselves The Ultimate Link Builder Helper. Use Drop My Link’s collection of SEO footprints to build links fast.
Google Ranking Factors – this is a complete list of Google’s 200 ranking factors for your reference.
Google Search Console – this is another resource that no website owner should do without. Google Search Console tells you how many links are connecting to your website, gives you information on each backlink that your site has, and provides other useful tools to improve your search ranking on Google.

Reciprocal Link Checker – many directories and other websites will allow you to put your link on their site for free under the condition that you reciprocate this and put their link on your website in return. This tool will help you make sure that these websites are honoring the link reciprocation.

Social Submission Engine – SocialSubmissionEngine.com is a neat tool that helps build traffic to your website by assisting with your social media promotion efforts.

Webmaster’s Directory – this is a directory that is full of excellent tools and resources to help website owners manage and enhance their websites, improve their SEO, and drive traffic.
Website Encyclopedia – information resource on various websites. Use this tool to get detailed info on the sites in their database.
As you go through the link building process, you will probably find that there is no shortage of paid link building tools, resources, products, services etc. Before you invest even one dollar on link building, use the free resources that were mentioned in this post first. By doing so, you will put yourself way ahead of most other new website owners, and you may find that you don’t have to spend your money on link building based on the results that you achieve from using these resources.
